Alleppey Tours Online

Rajesh Gehlot (Dubai) – We are planning our visit to Allepey Kerala in coming December, ours is a group of 7 people including 3 ladies. My concern is about the safety, which houseboat route would be the safest and if suppose we take overnight cruise is it safe?? Because there will be other houseboat staff member / members in the houseboats and the houseboat pictures on the web gives you an idea that they are entirely open, no rooms or doors etc. please suggest

Shobhit Khurana – Kerala is safest place for tourist and no need to worry at all. Being tourist centric place Kerala government has very strict control over the service providers and people associated with the travel or tourist related services. Also you can take assistance of your travel coordinator to find the best suitable houseboat as per your requirement or do some web research upon the same. Almost all the houseboats here in Allepey are well reputed and are safe and sound, need not worry at all. Not sure which pictures on the web you are referring to but these houseboats are specifically designed for the family stay purposes having maximum privacy. There are doors to bed rooms & bathrooms are attached. Also if you want you can hire non sharing boats or exclusive family cruise option where there will be no other guests on your boat (surely it depends upon your budget). There are three basic routes option for this houseboat cruise i.e. Allepey local cruise, tour from Allepey to Kumarakom and Kumarakom local cruises. You can choose any of them all of them are full of scenic beauty and mesmerizing surroundings. It is better to plan your travel itinerary well in advance and then choose the houseboat cruise route accordingly as they vary from few hours to full day or overnight trips. Also in Allepey or Alappuzha you can visit these famous tourist destinations Alappuzha Beach, Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple, Arthunkal Basilica, Mannarasala Temple, Chettikulangara Devi Temple, Haripad Subrahmanya Swamy Temple, Mullakkal Temple, Edathua Church, Alappuzha CSI Christ Church (oldest Anglican church in Kerala), Champakulam Valia Palli and Krishnapuram Palace etc.

Nicoh Sen (Malaysia) – We have just finalized Alleppey Backwater Trip in November through a local travel company, could you please guide us what all to expect in this specific trip. At least we should sure of that we aren’t missing any important attractions or activities on this trip to Alleppey.

Shobhit Khurana – Alleppey is a beautiful place with its backwater is formed by Vembandu Lake has been a favourite spot for many Indian filmmakers especially southern film industry. Many regional language films are being shot here. ‘Backwaters’ are a sort of fresh water lake or canal that is formed near the sea cost or coastal belt, here in Kerala there are two main places where you can experience backwater are Alleppey and Kumarakom. Alleppey being more inclined toward originality and natural surroundings has plenty of islands or groups of islands surrounded by backwaters and on every island there is a village. All these backwaters or canals in between serve as routes and are named as inland waterways. Though government of Kerala has frequent service of local ferries on these routes just like state bus or road transport but in recent year due to heavy tourism in this place there are several private players entered in this sector resulting in premium luxury houseboats or budget small private boats for tourist sightseeing and excursion etc. you can opt for either of the two depending upon your budget and the days or time you would be spending there. The houseboat will take you through all the major routes comprising of backwaters beauty, villages, observing local lifestyles and moreover you can stay overnight or more on the houseboat as they are equipped with all facilities including bedroom, toilets, bathroom, and kitchen etc. you can taste the local cuisine on the houseboat itself while cruising through the mesmerizing sceneries of Alleppey. Whereas in small boats or canoes you can surf through the narrow canals touching the local life and observing the villages very closely, it is no doubt a totally different experience from the former. Here you can touch the banks and bridges observing localities busy in their day today work.

Jayant Prashar (Bhopal) – I am planning to visit Kerala next month with my family including two small kids. I shall be grateful if you could help me in finalization of the same, can you please revert the road travelling time between Alleppey to Kanyakumari and Alleppey to Periyar? Also which one of the two would be suitable for a single day trip?

Shobhit Khurana – Well as you would be travelling with your family including children or otherwise also, I would strongly suggest you to stretch your trip by a day or two or make it at least an overnight trip. To and fro to any of these destinations from Alleppey would be hectic and you wouldn’t be able to enjoy any of the places, your whole trip would become nothing more than just travelling on the roads itself. Both Kanyakumari and Periyar are extremely beautiful places should be covered in minimum two or more days. From Alleppey it will take around 6 hours to reach Kanyakumari and around 5 hours to reach Periyar, this time limit is directly related to the traffic conditions as Kanyakumari route is bit congested as well so could take bit more time accordingly.

Sandra Perez (Mexico) – Since we will be in Alleppey for a short time, we would like to go boat for around 4-5 hours but regular houseboats go for a touring of whole day or more. If you could suggest something, it is our first visit to the place and we are 5 members. Thanks.

Shobhit Khurana – You can opt for small boat cruise which goes through small canals and narrow backwater routes. It is equally adventurous even better than regular houseboat rides if you are looking for small time boat ride. Further the route between Alleppey to Kottayam is the best suitable as it takes around 4 hours and the boat cruises though various interlinked canals and Vembanad Lake from where you can observe the villages and lifestyles of the local people very closely.

Sunder Rawat (Dehradun) – I along with my 3 friends are planning to do the backwater cruise in Kerala. But we are bit confused between Kumarakom and Alleppey which one to choose. Could you please guide us which place has the best backwaters or houseboat ride and resort to stay for a week (approx.)? Any advice will be genuinely appreciated.

Shobhit Khurana – Though both the places are unique in terms of natural beauty and also receive huge amount of domestic as well as international tourism but as per your query specifically Kumarakom is bit of a city experience also it has some of the best backwater resorts. Whereas in Alleppey the houseboats are better and it has much more scenic beauty or natural landscapes in comparison to Kumarakom. So you can decide yourself what all are your preference for this specific trip accordingly.

Daniel (UK) – We are planning to go to Kerala in February with my friend for six days. I would like to stay in Munnar, do at least one night in a houseboat and visit Kovalam and if possible a day in Kanyakumari. Kindly assist me to plan an itinerary of the same.

Shobhit Khurana – You can plan your arrival at Cochin (or Kochi) the travel to Munnar which is around 130 KMs will take you around 4-5 Hours and you can stay in Munnar for 2 nights then travel to Alleppey which is around 160 KMs will take you around 5-6 hours there you can spend a night in houseboat. Next day you can move to Kovalam which is around 160 KMs will take you around 4-5 hours and remain there for the next 2 nights to take flight back or depart from Trivandrum. In between you can take a day’s trip to Kanyakumari from Kovalam it is around 90 KMs that will take around 2-3 hours to reach. Better to use taxi or cabs for all the travel.

Chelsee (Norway) – I am 54 years old, have travelled almost all over the globe, I prefer mostly to travel alone. I have already travelled northern part of India 5 years ago but recently I have read lot about assaults on foreign women in India, hence bit sceptical in visiting here alone this time. Though I have booked my solo trip to Alleppey in coming November for 3 days and shall be staying in the luxury houseboat. Is it safe to remain overnight on the houseboat or what are your views on this?

Shobhit Khurana – It is absolutely safe here in Kerala. Please not to worry at all about the safety of houseboats they are completely safe for travellers. In have not heard even a single such incident so far. Alleppey is peaceful place basically tourist oriented, in fact whole Kerala’s annual revenue depend majorly upon tourism hence the government and local residents are very much concerned about the incoming tourists or travellers requirements and safety issues. Also Kerala is the only state in India which has an amazing education or literacy rate of far above 90% hence you will find a lot of people including local police or legal authority personnel speaking fluent English and also other foreign languages. Here are few specific tips that could further safeguard or enhance your confidence while travelling here in Alleppey is that any houseboat in Kerala is always registered with government further you can double check with the owner in regard to its registration certificate and official website or address etc. There is always 1-2 attendants present on the houseboat catering to the tourist though you can specifically ask for a female attendant (though it could charge you little extra but would be worth spending). The houseboat ends its cruise around 5 – 6 PM and has to be anchored to the shore which is generally near to the village or other houseboats or resorts. Though while houseboat is anchored till for overnight till 8 AM next morning but you can still roam around by via small boat or canoe inside the backwaters or inter linked canals that is also till 8 PM only. After eight PM you should try to stay in the houseboat itself enjoying food and take some good books or music CDs and player to spent time. Night excursion to nearby villages should be avoided alone. If you houseboat is anchored near some resort then it is the best time to get a relaxing natural spa and then return to your boat for a sound sleep.
